Apart from regular Divisions and Sections, the Sugarcane Breeding Institute is ably supported by the functions of the following sections

AKMU

Agriculture Knowledge Management Unit

The Agricultural Knowledge Management Unit (formerly known as ARIS Cell) established during 1996 functions under the Statistics Section. The Institute has set up a LAN consisting of nearly 100 nodes with a 100 mbps Internet Connectivity that has been provided by Ministry of Science and Technology under National Knowledge Network (NKN) in coordination with National Informatics Centre (NIC). The AKMU also takes care of maintaining and updating the Institute website.

Library

Sugarcane Breeding Institute Library, one of the oldest libraries in Coimbatore has a collection of about 12000 books consisting of Textbooks, Reference Books, Theses, Annual Reviews, Advances and bound volumes of Journals.

The major subjects covered are: Sugarcane, Biotechnology, Breeding, Genetics, Botany, Pathology, Entomology, Nematology, Physiology, Agronomy, Soil science, Agricultural chemistry, Statistics and Computer science.

At present, 13 Foreign Journals and 35 Indian Journals are being subscribed.

Other publications such as Annual Reports, Research Highlights, Newsletters, Scientific / Technical papers received free from ICAR institutes, SAUs, and Foreign R & D Organizations are organized and made available to the users for reference

Faclities

  • Computers: SBI Library has provided eight desktop PCs to its users, which are connected to the Institute’s LAN with Broadband Internet connection, E-mail and Inter-computer (IP) messaging facility and application software for creating and processing different types of documents.
  • Scanner: A scanner is also available, which is being used to digitize documents in print form. The Library has a heavy-duty photocopier [Toshiba eStudio2007] to cater to the reprographic needs, as well.
  • Software:Library has software like Adobe Acrobat, Abbyy Fine Reader, Omni Page Pro[for doing OCR] and PaperPort [for OCR and File management]
  • E-Journals [jgateplus.com]: Library has “Online Access to E-journals” a facility provided by ICAR under CeRA (Consortium on e-Resources in Agriculture) funded under NAIP. This provides access to the journals published by CSIRO (Australia), Springer, and Annual Reviews Inc, Indianjournals.com, Nature.com and a number of Open Access Journals

The Library has the following bibliographic databases with abstracts on CD. These databases have been hosted on the Library Server and can be accessed by those connected to the LAN of the Institute

  1. Information Search and Retrieval from Books and Journals, Internet, Online / CD databases and also obtaining information from other Libraries / Sources, whenever required.
  2. Current Awareness Service [Display of New Arrivals, Newspaper Clippings, Current information on Notice Board etc.]
  3. Reprography facility
  4. Scanning / Content digitization

Outreach

For the benefit of the library users, SBI library conducts User Awareness Programmes periodically. The following programmes/workshops were organised by the library in the recent years.

  4. CeRA-ScienceDirect workshop and First anniversary of CaneInfo on 8.7.2011

Scientists and Research scholars from Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Central Institute of Cotton Research – Regional Centre, Coimbatore, Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering – IEP, Coimbatore and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) participate in these workshops.

Besides these programmes, SBI library also periodically conducts Book exhibitions and arrange for interactions with Information management experts for the benefit of Scientists, Research scholars and Libraries of SBI and local institutes.

Technical Cell

Activities of Technical Cell

  1. The Technical Cell acts as a link between the Institute and the ICAR Head Quarters in maintaining all day-to-day correspondences on technical matters.
  2. The Technical Cell acts as a link between the Institute and external Institutions, including sugar factories, farmers and other research institutions.
  3. The section maintains all the Research Project Forms (RPF) of all ongoing and completed research projects of the Institute.
  4. The section maintains all files and correspondence with regard to Externally Funded Schemes.
  5. Contracts for Consultancy Services are routed through this section
  6. The section coordinates the Education services offered by the Institute to students who are pursuing short term research projects and Doctoral programmes offered by various Universities.
  7. Monitoring of breeder seed production schemes and supply of seed material to sugar factories and farmers are facilitated through this section
  8. All Institutional meetings and weekly seminars are arranged through this section

The Institute has a total area of 80.09 ha including farm, laboratory and office buildings. The farm area is 54.98 ha and is situated in three campuses viz., Main (7.28 ha), ECC (28.50 ha), Additional land (17.20 ha) and VPT (2.00 ha)
