FAQ - Nutrient Management

  1. What is the nutrient requirement for sugarcane?
  2. An average crop of sugarcane yielding 100 t/ha removes 208kg of N, 53kg of P, 280kg of K, 30 kg of Sulphur, 3.4kg of iron, 1.2 kg of manganese, 0.6 kg of copper respectively from the soil. Hence, soil has to be replenished to maintain the productivity of sugarcane with the said quantities of nutrients.
  3. How much manures and fertilizers are to be applied to sugarcane?
  4. It is always better to apply manures and fertilizers based on soil test recommendations. If soil test values are available, one can refer to the "Fertilizer Advisory Service" of CaneInfo Website (after proper login if you are a registered member). In the absence of soil test recommendations, apply 12.5 t/ha of bulky organic manure during field preparation. The fertilizer recommendations vary from state to state depending upon the soil fertility status and yield levels. Fertilizer recommendations for sugarcane in major Indian states are given in this table.
  5. Is there any methodology or technique, which is simple and can be easily used use for calculating the amount of the fertilizers to be used for sugarcane crop after soil testing (with special reference to Maharashtra)?

  7. What is the time of fertilizer application for sugarcane?
  8. The entire dose of phosphorus is applied as basal dose and the N and K are applied in two equal splits as top dressing at 45 and 90 days after planting. In open textured sandy soils and for early varieties, three equal split application of N and K fertilizers is recommended.
  9. What is meant by Integrared Nutrient Management (INM)?
  10. Integrared Nutrient Management (INM) includes intelligent use of organic, inorganic and biological resources to sustain optimum yield levels; improve or maintain the soil chemical and physical properties; provide crop nutrition packages that are technically sound, economically attractive, practically feasible and environmentally safe. INM optimizes all aspects of nutrient cycling - supply, uptake and loss to the environment(with minimal environmental pollution) to improve food production.
  11. What are the INM practices for sugarcane?
    • Soil testing for nutrients to determine the amounts of additional nutrients needed to reach designated yield goals
    • Apply fertilizers based on soil test results; make it available to plant roots to avoid losses due to volatilization of ammonia, erosion and run-off. For this, appropriate structural controls (like land levelling), tillage practices may be followed.
    • Time nitrogen application to synchoronize with crop uptake patterns, moisture availability and minimize leaching and run-off losses
    • Foliar application during drought and fertigation with drip irrigation may be followed
    • Use organic manures; rotate crops; include legumes in the cropping system to improve total nutrition recovery with different rooting patterns
