Welcome to ICAR -Sugarcane Breeding Institute

ICAR – Sugarcane Breeding Institute (ICAR–SBI), Coimbatore, has been a reliable source of genetically pure and virus-free sugarcane seed material for Sugarcane growers. With the increasing demand for high-quality seed canes, the institute launched the Farmers’ Participatory Seed Production Programme in 2016 to enhance seed availability and ensure sustainability in sugarcane cultivation. Over the past eight years, several high yielding varieties of the institute including Co 86032, Co 06030, Co 0212, Co 06022, Co 0403, Co 09004, Co 11015, Co 14012, and Co 18009 have been successfully multiplied and distributed across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Till 2026, a total of 12018 tonnes of quality seed canes were supplied to sugarcane growers.

                    The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI) Regional Centre, Karnal plays a critical role in addressing the varietal needs of sub-tropical states, including Uttar Pradesh (Central & Western), Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Due to strong stakeholder demand for its sugarcane varieties alongside limited land and human resources, the centre-initiated Farmers’ Participatory Seed Production during 2017–18 to meet out the bulk demand of sugar mills for establishment of three tier seed nursery programme. Through this collaborative approach, the centre produced and distributed 23,005.3 tonnes of high-quality seed material up to 2026. Key high-yielding and high-sugar varieties supplied include Co 0238, Co 0118, Co 15023, Co 16030, Co 17018, Co 98014, Co 05011, Co 98014 and Co 13035.
