Tissue Culture Plantlets

Micropropagation facility at ICAR-SBI for producing tissue culture plantlets

ICAR SBI has standardised and developed efficient protocols for tissue culture and micropropagation of sugarcane for the first time in the country in the year 1986. With a well-established micropropagation laboratory at the institute large scale tissue culture plantlet production was started in the year 2011 onwards. The institute laboratory caters to the needs of Tamil Nadu and other states such as Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh. Micropropagated plants from ICAR-SBI have been well accepted by sugar factories and farmers of all over the country because of its quality, free from disease, vigourous growth and high yield. Currently the laboratory has a capacity to produce about 2.0 lakh plantlets annually. The laboratory also supports R and D facilities of sugar factories all over the country by supplying virus indexed disease free mother culture flasks. The technology, is successfully incorporated into the system of seed multiplication in sugarcane wherein the basic clean tissue culture plantlets form the starting planting materials from which the single budded settling or two budded setts are used for raising primary seed nursery and secondary seed nursery. The micropropagation lab is regularly extending the services for HRD, problem solving and advisories on all aspects of micropropagation throughout the country.
