Field level Awareness Campaign

As a part of ‘Intensive Awareness Campaign for Adoption of Science Based Nutrient and other Input Management’, a field level campaign was conducted at Kuppanur in Coimbatore district, an adopted village under ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ Scheme. The campaign was conducted in an areca grove with trees in bearing with orange-yellow to red drupes which looked quite healthy. Buffalo grass as a cover crop is a smart move to regulate soil moisture, outcompete major weeds and act as a living mulch; the field is being irrigated with micro-irrigation.  They were advised to opt for organic manuring like bonemeal, farm yard manure for sustaining soil health and reducing the usage of fertilizers; and keep the fields well drained as the crop does not tolerate waterlogging. Application of bonemeal mixtures was demonstrated to them. The versatile use of areca fronds beyond just mulch, the fallen fronds can be used for making biodegradable plates, hats, high quality organic vermicompost to cycle nutrients back into the field was also discussed.
