Agri Business incubator

About ICAR-SBI ABI

ICAR- Sugarcane Breeding Institute (ICAR-SBI) is a foremost publicly funded R&D Institution for sugarcane, sugar, ethanol and value-added products from sugarcane. A Century old Premier Institute has largest germplasm of sugarcane in the world. ICAR-SBI is developing varieties for different agro climatic zones of the country as well as special purpose varieties such as energy canes, short duration varieties, saline tolerant, red flush sugarcanes to serve the specific utility. It plays a significant role in bringing the food and nutritional safety through its dedicated and sustainable research. The institute has developed varieties which cultivate more than 80 % of sugarcane area in the country and other countries in the world. ICAR-SBI has brought sugar revolution through varietal development and produced significant quantity of surplus sugar for export market.
Over the years, it is being comprehended that besides varietal and technology development, product diversification from sugarcane provides opportunity for sugarcane growers to increase their revenue in sustainable way for doubling income. Sugarcane is cultivated in all parts of the country. The surplus sugarcane could be utilized for the development of new and novel products with high dietary value which cater the nutritional security of the population. It creates new employment and infrastructure in rural and sub urban areas.
ICAR through the World bank sponsored National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) Sphere headed this concept by establishing Agri Business incubator (ABI) for technology Transfer and Business Planning at leading research institutions under the ICAR’s purview. The proposed agribusiness Centre is named as “SugarcaneEdge®”. It encourages commercialization of sugarcane cultivation and sweetener based novel food products.
ICAR-SBI has successfully commercialised about 23 technologies for sugarcane cultivation and value-added products based on sugarcane. These technologies could be licensed for commercialization through Institute Technology Management Unit (ITMU) by the entrepreneurs, Strat-ups and cottage industries especially micro food processing industries. The Agri business Incubator of the Institute provides necessary handholding supports to progressive farmers, Start-ups and sweeteners based food processing industries for consumer driven value chain management.
ICAR-SBI has well established facilities for production of tissue culture sugarcane plants, virus indexing for disease free plants, bio control agents for sugarcane production and fidelity testing for varieties. Institute is licensing varieties and technologies for upscaling and commercialisation. About 98 MoU was signed for different technologies which is developed in the institute

Infrastructure

The Institute at present has one Regional Centre at Karnal (Haryana) and two Research Centres at Kannur and Agali in Kerala.  The Regional Centre at Karnal, established in 1932, caters to the requirement of evaluating breeding stocks and evolving superior commercial varieties for the subtropics. In 1956 the world germplasm collection was introduced for maintenance at Taliparamba in Kerala State.  This was subsequently shifted to Kannur (Kerala) in the year 1962.  The world’s largest collection of sugarcane germplasm comprising 3368 clones is maintained at Sugarcane Breeding Institute Research Centre, Kannur. The Agali centre established in 1995 acts as a National Off Season Nursery Facility for the mandated crops and serves as Distant Hybridization Facility to widen the genetic base of sugarcane varieties being evolved in addition to augmenting the resources of the National Hybridisation Garden.

Sugarcane Edge®

SugarcaneEdge is a unique business incubation centre was established during 2020 for development of sugarcane and sweetener based healthy food products. It helps in developing tools and semi-automated machineries for processing sugarcane juice and production of novel food products through sugarcane. Currently, institute has pilot scale facility for production of cane jam, liquid jaggery, dietary fibre food products and novel frozen food products. In addition, institute has lab scale facility for cane juice powder making through spray and freeze-dried methods

Lab Scale Agri Business Incubation

Farmers’ Commission report emphasized the promotion of agri-preneurship through income generation activities in the rural areas through appropriate technologies. The institutional functionality of agricultural technology product system created in the country needs essential transformation to enable them to generate rural employment generation through appropriate technologies and capacity development of potential entrepreneurs.
Identification of appropriate technology, potential entrepreneurs and capacity development process based on national occupation standards are the basic requirements of imparting knowledge, skill and business operating guidance. Recognition of personality traits, pre learning level and measuring the aptitude and attitude are some of the essential components of capacity development programmes.
Identification and selection of right project, product and business plan formulation are the other side of the coin in starting a profitable rural enterprise. Keeping in view of the present-day market dynamics and challenges it is essential to prepare the potential rural youth to successful entrepreneur. Practicality of the approach, technological and methodological backstopping are some of the essentials in the business development process required from the technology developers for the start – ups.
The sugarcane and sugar Technology Management – Business Planning and Development (Sugarcane – BPD) set up to assist, develop and strengthen the entrepreneurship development, encourage technology-based start-ups and technology driven sugarcane- business ventures and commercialization of sugarcane and sugar technologies through incubation. The Sugarcane – BPD accelerate the sugarcane and sugar-based start-ups to accelerate the cash crop-based sweeteners and high value food additives to the end users.
